A plug-in hybrid newcomer against Australia's most trusted ute nameplate. Here's how the BYD Shark 6 Premium and Toyota HiLux Rogue compare for weekend jobs, towing, road trips and running costs.

Both of these utes live in our Merrylands fleet, and both get booked constantly — but for very different reasons. If you're deciding which one to take for the weekend, here's the honest comparison.
The Shark 6 is a plug-in hybrid. Charge it overnight and short Sydney trips — job sites, deliveries, the school run, a Bunnings loop — can be done largely on electricity. Over a weekend of suburban driving, the difference in fuel spend against a diesel ute is significant.
The HiLux Rogue's 48V mild-hybrid diesel is efficient for what it is, but it's still a diesel. On a long highway run that's an advantage; on stop-start Sydney traffic, the Shark wins.
The Shark 6 is genuinely quick and eerily quiet, with instant torque off the line. It doesn't drive like a traditional ute, which most people find to be a good thing.
The HiLux Rogue drives like a HiLux should — planted, durable, wide-tracked, and confident on dirt. The Rogue trim adds the wider stance and suspension tune that make it far more comfortable than a base workhorse.
Both handle a standard trailer, boat or box trailer comfortably. For heavy, repeated, long-distance towing, the diesel HiLux is the safer pick — you're never hunting for a charger with a trailer behind you.
The Shark 6 is the more modern cabin by a clear margin — large screens, vehicle-to-load power outlets (genuinely useful on a job site or camping), and a quieter ride.
The HiLux Rogue is more conventional but everything is where you expect it, and it's built to be lived in.
Tradies and weekend movers around Parramatta and Western Sydney lean toward the Shark 6 for cost. Anyone heading up the coast, towing a boat, or going off the bitumen books the HiLux Rogue.
Both are available for self-drive hire through our Turo listings — see them on the fleet page.
